MV Barima tragedy: Relief efforts exceed $75 million as opposition seeks interim payments

Efforts to support families affected by the MV Barima tragedy have seen over $75 million in financial and material assistance provided through the H. E. A. R. T. Initiative. Since its launch in July, the initiative has assisted more than 750 people across ten regions with funeral expenses, housing, education, and psychosocial services. The Ministry of Housing has approved 20 families for land and homes, while agencies are working to replace lost identification documents.

In response to the disaster, the Office of the Leader of the Opposition has launched the Helping, Empowering, and Rebuilding Opportunities (HERO) Initiative. Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has called on the Government of Guyana to provide an interim relief payment of G$5 million to every affected family to alleviate the financial burden caused by the loss of breadwinners.

The MV Barima, an 87-year-old state-operated vessel, capsized off the coast of Essequibo on July 18. The incident resulted in 73 deaths, 76 rescues, and at least 30 people reported missing.
