MV Canawaima ferry service resumes between Guyana and Suriname

The ferry service operated by the MV Canawaima between Guyana and Suriname is set to resume operations on August 28, 2026, following the lifting of a ban on the vessel.

The suspension was previously implemented due to technical and structural compliance concerns raised by the Maritime Authority of Suriname (MAS). Following successful technical inspections and adherence to specific requirements, the vessel has been cleared to return to its regular schedule.

The Government of Guyana stated that the immediate priority for the resumption of service will be the transportation of stranded passengers. Officials from both Guyana and Suriname have been working to resolve the compliance issues and will continue discussions regarding the subsequent drydocking of the MV Canawaima and the potential for a replacement vessel to ensure uninterrupted service.
