M.V. Canawaima ferry service suspended between Guyana and Suriname

The ferry service between Guyana and Suriname has been suspended due to technical concerns regarding the M.V. Canawaima, leaving numerous passengers and vehicles stranded at Moleson Creek in Guyana and South Drain in Suriname.

Surinamese authorities, specifically the Maritime Administration of Suriname (MAS), had previously issued warnings regarding the vessel's safety requirements. These included the need for fully operational firefighting and detection systems, presence of inspected equipment, and valid safety training certificates for all crew members. While a marine surveyor proposed a rehabilitation programme to extend the 30-year-old vessel’s service life by a decade, this assessment does not constitute official clearance to resume operations.

Canawaima Ferry Service Inc stated that the suspension is temporary due to technical issues and that management is working to resolve them. Passengers have reported being left without clear timelines for resumption, complicating travel for tourists and locals alike.
