MV Cape Dao attacked near Oman, killing one Indian seafarer
The commercial bulk carrier MV Cape Dao, flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. The vessel was struck by two torpedoes on its port side, impacting the C-deck accommodation area and the engine room, which triggered a fire.
One Indian seafarer, identified as 26-year-old Suraj Yadav from Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, was killed in the attack. The Royal Navy of Oman conducted an evacuation of 27 crew members, providing them with necessary medical care. The Indian Embassy in Muscat is coordinating with Omani authorities and the relevant recruitment agencies to ensure the safety of the remaining crew and to facilitate the repatriation of the deceased.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs condemned the attack, describing the ongoing targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region as deeply worrisome. The Ministry called for immediate dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions and restore free, unimpeded navigation through international waterways.
