MV Cape Don faces disposal following NSW Government seizure

The MV Cape Don, a 76-metre lighthouse tender built at Newcastle's State Dockyard in 1963, has been seized by NSW Maritime for ‘safe disposal’. The vessel, described as Australia's last Commonwealth Lighthouse Service tender, has been berthed at Balls Head in Sydney Harbour for several years.

The Sea Heritage Foundation, a volunteer-run charity that owns and maintains the ship, is fighting the seizure. The Foundation asserts that the vessel's underwater hull remains sound and is demanding an independent inspection to prevent the ship from being scrapped. They argue the vessel holds significant historical value, having participated in scientific expeditions such as the salvage of anchors from the HMS Investigator.

Following its decommissioning from the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service in 1990, the Cape Don was used for passenger and cargo transport in the Solomon Islands and the South Pacific. It is currently utilized for training programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, veterans, and researchers.
