MV Cape Don seized by NSW authorities near Sydney Harbour

NSW Maritime has seized the MV Cape Don, a 2,000-tonne historic vessel moored at Waverton near Sydney Harbour, due to concerns regarding its deteriorating condition. Authorities cited risks to public safety and the environment, noting that hull corrosion and potential chemical leaks could lead to the ship sinking. The government estimates that a salvage operation could cost taxpayers approximately $15 million.

The seizure follows years of engagement with the vessel's owners, the Sea Heritage Foundation. NSW Maritime stated that the owners had previously received two Unsafe Vessel Notices requiring repairs and dry docking. The decision follows a campaign by the community group Save Our Sydney Harbour to remove derelict vessels from the area.

The Sea Heritage Foundation has challenged the seizure, disputing the assessment that the ship is at immediate risk of sinking. Foundation chair Dr. CJ Manjarres-Wahlberg has called for the government to release the independent professional evidence used to justify the decision and the estimated salvage costs.
