MV June Aster ferry disaster death toll rises to 76 near Coron

The death toll from the MV June Aster ferry disaster near Coron, Palawan, has risen to 76 following the recovery of 41 sets of remains from the charred vessel. While 43 people survived the incident, 13 individuals remain unaccounted for.

Forensic teams, including the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) and the Philippine National Police, are currently working to identify victims through DNA sampling, a process that officials warn could take weeks or months due to the severity of the burns. Investigators are still attempting to access flooded lower decks and debris to search for additional remains.

The fire broke out on a Wednesday night while the vessel was approximately 39 kilometers from Coron. Survivors reported hearing explosions near the cargo bay shortly before flames spread. A multi-agency inquiry involving the Philippine Coast Guard and the Maritime Industry Authority is investigating the cause of the fire and whether Atienza Interisland Ferries Inc. complied with emergency protocols and pre-departure safety regulations.
