MV Liemba begins technical trials after TSh 34 billion overhaul

The 111-year-old passenger ship MV Liemba has begun technical trials following a TSh 34 billion rehabilitation project. The overhaul, completed by the Dar-es Salaam Merchant Group and fully funded by the Tanzanian government, aims to restore the historic vessel to service on Lake Tanganyika.

Transport Minister Prof. Makame Mbarawa oversaw the first phase of trials in Kigoma, which focused on testing basic systems and newly installed machinery. A second, more comprehensive phase of testing is scheduled for August 19 to 21 to ensure all critical systems meet national and international safety standards. Following successful trials, the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) will conduct inspections before the ship resumes commercial operations on September 1.

The vessel serves as a vital transport link for Tanzanian communities and neighboring Burundi, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Officials stated the ship is designed to serve for another 50 years with proper maintenance.
