MV Rhododendron ferry causes concern in British Columbia

The MV Rhododendron, a ferry built in 1947, is currently moored and listing near Fanny Bay, British Columbia. Originally used in Puget Sound, the vessel was purchased by Island Scallops in 2013 for $275,000 US to serve as a storage vessel. Since then, it has passed through several private owners and has been stripped of valuable parts.

Local residents have expressed concern regarding the vessel, which has recently been the site of fires and boat parties. These incidents have prompted multiple responses from the RCMP over the last four months. There are also environmental concerns regarding the potential impact on the Baynes Sound ecosystem should the ship sink.

The Rhododendron is part of a larger issue of abandoned vessels along the British Columbia coast. According to the Canadian Coast Guard, there are 1,242 wrecked, abandoned, and hazardous vessels in the national inventory, with 766 located in British Columbia. Transport Canada is currently working with the owner of the Rhododendron to ensure compliance with the Wrecked, Abandoned and Hazardous Vessels Act.
