MÁV rolls out summer timetable upgrades and track works for Balaton routes

Hungarian railway operator MÁV announced that the summer timetable will go live on 20 June, with the new schedule entered into its electronic systems and soon available in the MÁVPlusz app. The operator expects about three million passenger trips to the Balaton region this season and has refined the timetable based on last year’s experience, reduced slow‑sign occurrences, improved track conditions and ensured proper train air‑conditioning.

FLIRT and KISS electric multiple units serving the Balaton corridor can operate at up to 160 km/h between Budapest and Székesfehérvár, and MÁV plans to introduce long‑distance motor‑trains on the route within 3‑4 years. Intercity services now include a few carriages loaned from Austria’s ÖBB. Staff will be stationed at key stations and backup buses will be ready to intervene if disruptions occur. Cyclists continue to need a bike‑ticket, and many trains offer expanded bicycle capacity.

During the summer months MÁV will also carry out extensive track works, causing scheduled line closures and replacement bus services that may add 10–30 minutes to journeys. Affected sections include Budapest–Szob, Budapest–Esztergom, the northern Balaton line, Győr–Celldömölk, the Pusztaszabolcs–Pécs corridor, parts of eastern Hungary (Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, Szerencs) and the Szeged–Békéscsaba area. International EuRegio trains to Vienna will run on replacement buses between Bruck an der Leitha and Vienna until 21 June.
