MVM Next introduces dynamic electricity pricing in Hungary

MVM Next is introducing a new dynamic electricity tariff, known as the D tariff, available starting September 11. This option is voluntary and intended for residential consumers and non-residential customers within the universal service framework who possess compatible smart meters capable of 15-minute interval readings.

The new pricing structure does not affect the existing subsidized energy limits. For residential users, the fixed A1 rate remains in effect for up to 2,523 kWh annually. For non-residential customers, the limit is 4,606 kWh. Consumption exceeding these thresholds will be priced according to fluctuating stock market electricity prices, calculated in 15-minute increments.

The dynamic tariff offers potential savings for consumers who can shift high-energy activities, such as electric vehicle charging or using air conditioning, to periods of low market prices, such as during peak solar production hours. However, the shift carries risks, as market prices can also be significantly higher than current fixed rates during peak demand or due to extreme weather and grid challenges.
