Mexico Tiene Vida fined for massive affiliation fraud
Mexico Tiene Vida, a political organization seeking national party status, was found to have fabricated more than 5,000 member registrations. The Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judicial Power (TEPJF) upheld the Instituto Nacional Electoral's (INE) determination that the group used photocopies of voter ID cards and screenshots to simulate 5,684 affiliations, violating rules that require authentic, personal, and in‑person registration.
The INE imposed a monetary sanction of 445,000 pesos, which the tribunal confirmed. The organization had collected 363,462 affiliation requests in four months, of which the INE validated only 295,326. Because of the irregularities, the tribunal rejected Mexico Tiene Vida's request for registration as a national political party.
Additional audits by the INE's technical audit unit identified further financial irregularities, resulting in a separate fine of 2.5 million pesos. The organization is led by businessman Jaime Ochoa Hernández, who has contested the findings.
