Myanmar celebrates Thadingyut Festival of Lights in October 2026

The Thadingyut Festival of Lights, marking the end of the three-month Buddhist Lent, will be observed across Myanmar from October 24 to 26, 2026. The festival commemorates Gautama Buddha’s return to the human realm after teaching in the celestial realm.

In the Bagan cultural zone, celebrations will include religious visits to historical temples and pagodas, markets, and cultural activities. A significant feature of the event in Bagan will be a hot air balloon program, with approximately 3,000 balloons scheduled for night launches from three different locations, managed under specific safety guidelines to maintain distance from villages and religious monuments.

Key traditions of the festival include lighting homes, streets, and religious institutions with oil lamps and candles. A central social custom is ‘Gadaw’, where younger generations pay respect to parents, teachers, and elders to express gratitude and seek forgiveness. Visitors to religious sites are encouraged to observe proper etiquette, including appropriate dress and respectful behavior toward elders.
