Myanmar migrants arrive from Malaysia amid UN safety warnings

Nearly 1,500 Myanmar migrants and refugees have arrived in southern Yangon from Malaysia under a controversial repatriation program. The first group of 1,476 individuals—comprising 1,370 men, 79 women, and 27 children—arrived at the Thanlyin naval base via three Myanmar Navy vessels.

This operation marks the initial phase of a broader plan by Malaysia to repatriate approximately 5,000 Myanmar nationals. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has indicated that a second group of over 3,500 people is planned, citing financial and security burdens.

The United Nations and various human rights organizations have criticized the scheme, warning that the returnees face significant dangers due to the ongoing civil war in Myanmar. The UN expressed concern that the decisions to return may not have been “genuinely free and informed,” noting that staff were not permitted to meet with the migrants to verify their status. Families gathered at the naval base expressed fears that returning youth could face forced conscription by the military or ethnic armed groups. Human rights monitors also suggested that poor conditions in Malaysian detention centers may have pressured migrants into accepting the repatriation.
