Myanmar military airstrike kills 14 at Buddhist monastery

A Myanmar military airstrike on a Buddhist monastery in the Sagaing region has killed 14 people and injured 20 others, according to opposition groups and local residents. The attack took place around 9 a.m. on Friday in Swel Le Oh village, located in Myaung township, approximately 75 kilometers west of Mandalay.

The victims were participating in a week-long meditation retreat for Buddhist Lent. At the time of the strike, more than 100 people were reportedly staying in or around the monastery compound. Witnesses stated that a fighter jet dropped two bombs in the village approximately 15 minutes apart; the second explosion reportedly damaged a nearby house.

The Civil Defense and Security Organization of Myaung Township (CDSOM) confirmed that the 14 fatalities included three women. This incident is part of a broader pattern of aerial strikes by the military against pro-democracy forces and ethnic armed groups, which frequently result in civilian casualties.
