Myanmar military chief meets Thai general in Bangkok
Myanmar’s military chief, Ye Win Oo, met with Thailand’s top general, Ukris Boontanondha, in Bangkok on Thursday. This marks the first international trip for the military leader since assuming his role following the 2021 coup and subsequent elections.
The discussions focused on enhancing security cooperation along the 2,400-kilometer border between the two nations. Key topics included joint efforts to combat the illicit drug trade, cyberscam networks, counterterrorism, and military training. The leaders also addressed humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and environmental issues such as cross-border haze, forest fires, and river contamination.
The meeting follows a period of diplomatic isolation for Myanmar’s post-coup leadership. While international observers and UN experts have criticized recent elections as a “sham” designed to rebrand military rule, neighboring countries like Thailand are engaging with the administration to manage unavoidable border issues and regional stability.
