Myanmar military targets land for Russia-backed Dawei project
The Myanmar military has deployed hundreds of troops to the southern Tanintharyi Region to forcibly clear land designated for the Russia-backed Dawei Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The project, which includes a planned deep-sea port and power plant on the Andaman Sea, is viewed by the military-backed government as a strategic trade alternative to the Strait of Malacca.
Resistance fighters and local activists report that the military is conducting area-clearance operations, which have included burning villages and homes. Reports from the Tanintharyi Region People's Defence Force indicate that military columns are advancing through the area, leading to clashes with local resistance groups. Additionally, there are allegations that troops burned homes in at least three villages and killed three aid workers who were supporting displaced communities in Yebyu Township.
The military push coincides with diplomatic efforts to revive the long-delayed project. Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing recently discussed the Dawei SEZ as a gateway to South and West Asia during meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and during a visit to Thailand.
