Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing claims leniency toward Aung San Suu Kyi
Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing, who rose to power following the 2021 military coup, stated in a recent interview that he has been ‘extremely lenient’ toward detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Suu Kyi, who was ousted and jailed after the military putsch, remains in detention on charges that rights groups claim were fabricated to maintain military rule.
Min Aung Hlaing, who transitioned from military chief to civilian president following elections criticized by the United Nations, has indicated that any potential amnesty for Suu Kyi depends on her, though he hinted at the possibility of reconsideration. This move is viewed by analysts as a diplomatic effort to reduce Myanmar's international isolation.
The military government currently faces significant challenges, including an ongoing civil war against various insurgent groups, such as the People’s Defence Forces and ethnic armed organizations. Despite holding major population centers, the junta's effective control is estimated to be limited to approximately 21 percent of the country.
