Malaysia repatriates 10,000 Myanmar nationals amid upcoming leader visit

Malaysia has repatriated approximately 10,000 Myanmar nationals since January through bilateral agreements involving both air and sea transport. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the program is a first-of-its-kind successful effort to return citizens to their country of origin. Recent shipments included roughly 1,400 individuals returned via Myanmar naval vessels.

To ensure human rights, Malaysia has mandated that Myanmar guarantees fair treatment for returnees to prevent abuse or coercion. While the repatriations include various ethnic groups such as Rakhine, Karen, and Shan, the Prime Minister noted that no members of the Rohingya ethnic group have been included in the returns to date.

Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing is expected to visit Malaysia in the coming days to discuss long-term solutions for the estimated 200,000 Myanmar refugees currently in the country. The Malaysian Immigration Department has indicated that these repatriation efforts are ongoing and have not been subject to a specific quota.
