Myanmar verifies 309,000 Rohingya for potential return from Bangladesh
Myanmar has officially verified 308,975 Rohingya refugees currently in Bangladesh as former residents of Rakhine State. The Myanmar Foreign Ministry stated that these displaced individuals will be permitted to return once the security situation in the conflict-affected Rakhine region becomes more stable.
This development marks a significant step in long-standing efforts to repatriate the Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim minority that has faced decades of persecution and statelessness. Since a military crackdown in 2017, more than 1.3 million Rohingya have sought refuge in Bangladesh, with others traveling to Indonesia and Malaysia.
However, large-scale repatriation remains complicated by ongoing fighting between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army, which has seized control of significant portions of Rakhine. Previous attempts at repatriation have failed due to concerns regarding security, citizenship, and fundamental rights. Bangladesh has maintained that any return process must be voluntary, safe, and sustainable, while refugees continue to demand guarantees of citizenship and basic rights.
