Myanmar willing to accept 300,000 Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh

Myanmar’s military-backed government has announced its willingness to accept the return of approximately 300,000 Rohingya refugees currently residing in camps in Bangladesh. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that these individuals have been verified as former residents of Rakhine State, but repatriation will only occur once security conditions in the region stabilize.

The announcement comes as the Rohingya refugee crisis enters its ninth year. Following a military crackdown in 2017, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled to Bangladesh, leading to international accusations of genocide and ethnic cleansing. Myanmar does not recognize the Rohingya as an official ethnic minority, instead referring to them as Bengalis to suggest they are illegal migrants.

According to official statements, Myanmar processed a list of 828,824 refugees provided by Bangladesh as of late July. Of the 426,545 individuals verified, 308,797 were confirmed as former residents of Rakhine. Authorities noted that 113,507 individuals could not be verified, and 4,241 were identified as having participated in what the government termed ‘terrorist activities.’

Myanmar officials also disputed claims that over one million people were displaced from Rakhine, asserting that more than 540,000 crossed into Bangladesh during the 2017 violence while over 200,000 remained in northern Rakhine.
