Mykhailo Drapatyi implements military reforms in Ukraine

Mykhailo Drapatyi, the 43-year-old Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has implemented significant strategic and structural changes during his first months in office. Following his appointment by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Drapatyi has initiated a broad personnel overhaul, moving dozens of high-ranking officers, including colonels and brigadier generals, into the reserve. This reorganization aims to replace older officers from the Soviet school of thought with younger commanders experienced in modern warfare.

Drapatyi’s tactical approach emphasizes slow, incremental advances supported by intensive drone usage, prioritizing the preservation of soldier lives. He has also focused on decentralizing command, delegating more initiative to local commanders.

In addition to moving officers to the reserve, Drapatyi has reinstated several officers who were previously dismissed by his predecessor, Oleksandr Syrskyi, including those who had criticized military micromanagement or resource shortages. These moves are part of an effort to retain officers with proven combat experience and command capabilities while restructuring the General Staff and various corps.
