Mykhailo Fedorov launches 'Army of Robots' initiative

Mykhailo Fedorov, the former Ukrainian Defense Minister, has announced the launch of the 'Army of Robots' initiative at the IT Arena 2026 conference in Lviv. This project aims to accelerate the robotization of warfare by transitioning dangerous battlefield tasks from soldiers to machines.

The initiative is designed as a private defense ecosystem rather than a single company. It will involve investing in defense-tech startups, developing proprietary technological projects, establishing research and development capabilities, and testing solutions directly with the military to scale effective systems quickly. Fedorov noted that while drones currently account for over 95 percent of battlefield strikes and Ukraine has more than 700 UAV manufacturers, the next technological leap must involve land-based robotics.

Key objectives include the development of humanoid robots capable of performing tasks such as reloading weapons, changing batteries, installing sensors, evacuating the wounded, delivering ammunition, and mine clearance. Fedorov set ambitious timelines: aiming for a humanoid robot to conduct its first lethal strike against an enemy soldier within six months, and executing the first coordinated assault involving both robots and drones without direct infantry involvement within one year.

Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir, is identified as a key investor in this new venture. The project seeks to recruit specialized engineers, technical specialists, and a Chief Technology Officer to drive its development.
