Mykonos Urban Planning Department faces corruption probe and closure

The Mykonos Urban Planning Department is facing a massive corruption investigation led by the Cyclades Prosecutor's Office and the Hellenic Police Internal Affairs Directorate. Authorities are examining over 1,600 cases of building irregularities, missing files, and uncompleted inspections spanning a 20-year period from 2006 to the present. Uncollected fines related to these irregularities are estimated to reach several million euros.

Following the investigation, Mykonos Mayor Christos Veronis suspended the head of the department and announced the permanent closure of the office. The department head faces serious felony charges, including bribery, forgery, embezzlement, breach of trust, and document falsification.

A search of the department head's residence by police uncovered numerous official documents that should not have been in a private setting, a small quantity of narcotics, and an ancient amphora, which is being investigated under archaeological protection laws.
