Bangladesh faces surge in violent crimes and safety concerns

Bangladesh is facing a surge in violent crimes, fueling widespread fear among citizens regarding public safety and the protection of minorities.

In Mymensingh district, the body of Niranjan Chandra Sutradhar, a 50-year-old Hindu jewellery shop owner, was discovered inside a floating plastic drum near a sluice gate in the Begunbari area. Police identified the victim using a token found in his pocket from the Mymensingh Hindu Cooperative Credit Union Limited. Investigators noted injury marks on his head and chest, suggesting he was murdered before his body was disposed of in the water. No suspects have been detained.

Simultaneously, a deteriorating law-and-order situation has sparked intense anxiety among parents due to rising crimes against children. Recent tragedies include the murder of 13-year-old Ishiat Shahriar Opratim in the Cumilla district and the deaths of three children from a single family in the Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj. These incidents, alongside reports of abductions and sexual abuse, have led to public criticism of the government's ability to ensure domestic security.
