Myofascial pain syndrome risks and treatments explained

Associate Professor Hamza Sucuoğlu, a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Medipol Bahçelievler University Hospital, has provided insights into myofascial pain syndrome, commonly known as ‘kulunç’ in Turkey.

This chronic musculoskeletal condition affects the muscles and the surrounding fascia, typically manifesting as pain, stiffness, and restricted movement in the neck, upper back, and shoulder regions. The syndrome is triggered by physical strain, trauma, stress, psychological factors, and poor working conditions. Environmental factors, such as exposure to air conditioning or cold drafts while sweating, can also facilitate muscle spasms and the formation of trigger points.

Diagnosis is primarily conducted through physical examination to identify painful trigger points and to differentiate the condition from similar issues like neck or lumbar disc herniations. Treatment options include physical therapy, exercise, dry needling, heat applications, massage, and injection therapies for suitable patients.
