MySpace owners plan relaunch as platform eyes comeback

Brothers Chris and Tim Vanderhook, who acquired MySpace in 2011 through Specific Media and now operate it under Viant Technology, announced in a new documentary that they are preparing to relaunch the social network when market conditions are favorable. The planned revival would proceed without original co‑founder Tom Anderson and has no set launch date or confirmed feature list, though classic elements such as the Top 8 are being discussed.

MySpace, launched in 2003 and once the most visited website in the United States, was sold by News Corp in 2011 for $35 million. The owners hope the comeback can compete with dominant platforms like Facebook by offering a less algorithm‑driven experience, but the effort follows a previous failed attempt to regain market share.

The announcement highlights the platform’s historic role in music discovery and early social networking, while acknowledging the challenges of re‑entering a market now dominated by mobile apps, short‑form video and sophisticated recommendation systems.
