Mysterious rash outbreak in Odense linked to oak processionary caterpillars

Several residents of the Blangstedgård district in Odense have reported an intense, itchy rash that spread rapidly across the skin after outdoor exposure. Health officials suspect the cause is the oak processionary caterpillar (Thaumetopoea processionea), whose hairs can be carried by the wind and cause severe skin irritation, eye irritation, and respiratory problems. The local pharmacy reported a sharp increase in customers seeking treatment for the symptoms over the weekend, and families have reported multiple members being affected.

Odense Municipality has mobilised additional resources to control the caterpillar population in the southeast part of the city but has ruled out felling the affected oak trees, fearing further spread. The Patient Safety Authority advises residents to avoid contact with the larvae and nearby foliage, and to seek medical attention if they experience strong symptoms or breathing difficulties.
