Mystras man sentenced for concealing father's death in freezer

A 55-year-old man from Mystras was released after a court in Sparta sentenced him to 11 months in prison with a three-year suspension for giving false testimony. The case involves the concealment of his 90-year-old father's death; the man had kept the body in a professional freezer for at least 2.5 years.

The defendant testified that his actions were driven by grief and an inability to cope with the loss, rather than financial motives. He stated, “I put my father in the freezer because he was the last person I had on earth,” and claimed he provided false information to police to involve his sister in caring for the elderly man, who suffered from dementia.

While the charge of false testimony has been adjudicated, the investigation into potential fraud remains open. Authorities are investigating whether the man continued to collect his father's pension after his death. Forensic results are pending to determine the exact time of death and the duration of any illegal financial gains.
