Mytikas, Lefkada Enforces New Safety Measures After Swimmer Trapped by Strong Currents

On the morning of 5 August 2026, powerful currents in the narrow Mytikas‑Kalamos channel off Mytikas, Lefkada, pulled a swimmer into the concrete pier foundations, trapping her. Local rescuers intervened quickly, preventing serious injury despite minor hand bruises. The incident prompted the Lefkada Port Authority to identify the offending vessel and its Greek captain, issuing the first fine under a maritime regulation that took effect two years ago. The regulation, approved by Port Chief Panagiotis Leontarakis, limits vessel speed to 14 knots in the channel and to 9 knots within 500 m of the Mytikas shoreline, aiming to curb the chronic problem of dangerous currents that each summer endangers residents and visitors.
