Müzeyyen Şevkin highlights citrus producer crisis in Turkish Parliament
During a session of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, CHP Adana Deputy Dr. Müzeyyen Şevkin presented a research motion to address the economic crisis facing citrus producers. To illustrate the plight of farmers in the Çukurova region, Şevkin emptied bags of oranges, lemons, and mandarins onto the podium.
She highlighted a significant economic gap where producers suffer losses in the orchards due to rising costs for fuel, fertilizer, electricity, and pesticides, while consumers face high prices in markets and grocery stores. Şevkin noted that while Çukurova accounts for approximately 80 percent of Turkey’s citrus production, including 6 million tons of citrus and 2 million tons of lemons annually, the farmers are not receiving fair compensation for their labor.
