N48 road safety upgrades spark motorist controversy

The reopening of the N48 road between Drenthe and Overijssel has sparked significant debate among motorists following major maintenance work. While the asphalt has been renewed, Rijkswaterstaat has also installed 18 kilometers of new guardrails and replaced 13 kilometers of existing ones to comply with new safety guidelines regarding roadside obstacles.

Motorists have expressed concerns that the new guardrails are positioned too close to the driving lanes, creating a feeling of restricted space and making it difficult to maneuver during sudden evasive actions. Some users have described the new road layout as ‘life-threatening’ and have expressed intentions to avoid the route entirely.

Rijkswaterstaat maintains that the measures are essential for safety. The agency explained that the guardrails are necessary because many roadside areas lack the required ten-meter clearance from obstacles like trees and lamp posts. Although a widened central green strip may make the lanes appear narrower, officials state that the actual width of the lanes remains unchanged to ensure emergency services can pass. Additionally, Rijkswaterstaat has declined to lower the speed limit from 100 km/h to 80 km/h, asserting that the road is designed for current speeds.
