Na Hong-jin's sci-fi film 'Hope' premieres in international cinemas

South Korean director Na Hong-jin returns to cinema with ‘Hope – O Primeiro Impacto’ (Hope), a genre-blending film featuring science fiction, action, thriller, and dark comedy. The film, which competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, is seeing theatrical releases in markets including Brazil and Germany.

The story is set in Hope Harbor, a remote village near the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The plot follows local police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) as they face an extraterrestrial threat following the discovery of a mutilated animal. The production features a mix of South Korean stars like Zo In-sung and international actors including Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, with the latter group utilizing performance capture technology.

Critics have noted the film’s ambitious scale and high-octane chase sequences, though reception at Cannes was noted as polarized due to its unconventional mix of genres.
