Hope: South Korean sci-fi thriller breaks US opening records
The new South Korean sci-fi action thriller “Hope,” directed by Na Hong-jin, has achieved significant commercial success and sparked critical debate. The film, which features an international cast including Hwang Jung-min, Hoyeon, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander, recently set a record for the largest opening of a South Korean film in the United States, earning $1.1 million on its first day of release.
Set in the fictional coastal town of Hope Harbor near the North Korean border, the story follows a local police chief and a rookie officer as they confront a mysterious and violent extraterrestrial threat. While critics have praised the film’s high-octane action sequences and stylistic energy, reviews have been divided regarding its narrative cohesion and CGI quality.
Following its premiere in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival, the film has been described by some as a blend of art and genre spectacle, while others have noted its tendency toward chaotic or nonsensical elements. Despite mixed critical reception, the production marks a major ambitious step for Na Hong-jin, known for previous works such as “The Wailing.”
