Nabih Berri rejects security buffer zone in southern Lebanon

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has rejected the establishment of a security buffer zone or security belt in southern Lebanon under any circumstances. Speaking on the 48th anniversary of the disappearance of Imam Musa al-Sadr, Berri emphasized that southern Lebanon is an integral part of the country and that the responsibility for its reconstruction lies with the state.

Berri criticized previous diplomatic efforts, noting that after seven rounds of negotiations, occupied territories have expanded while Israel continues its military operations. He asserted that existential risks do not grant any party the right to act under the guise of a “framework agreement” or any secret annexes. He further stated that the true Israeli objective is not targeting Hezbollah or the Amal Movement, but rather inciting internal strife.

Reiterating national red lines, Berri declared that civil peace, national unity, and the Lebanese Army are non-negotiable. He also maintained Lebanon's right to prosecute Israel for what he described as “crimes of genocide” committed in the south.
