Nacala-Porto sees resurgence of informal fuel sales

Informal fuel sales have resumed in parts of Nacala-Porto, in the Nampula province, following a month of enforcement operations by authorities. Despite intensified inspections by the Rapid Intervention Unit, which previously reduced illegal activity, mobile stalls and other points of sale for gasoline and diesel have reappeared in peripheral areas.

Vendors cited a lack of employment and alternative income sources as the primary reasons for returning to the trade to support their families. To avoid detection and intervention by authorities, some sellers have reportedly shifted to more discreet methods, such as sales by order. This resurgence occurs amidst a prolonged fuel crisis in Nacala-Porto that has caused difficulties for both formal consumers and authorized fuel vendors.
