NADDC investigates Abuja Toyota Camry CNG explosion

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) is investigating an incident in which a CNG-retrofitted Toyota Camry exploded while refueling at the NIPCO Gas Filling Station on Airport Road in Abuja on September 13, 2026. No fatalities or injuries were reported during the event.

Preliminary findings suggest the vehicle may have been equipped with an unapproved cylinder that was unsuitable for compressed natural gas (CNG) use. The NADDC has urged motorists to use only certified conversion centers, utilize approved components, and avoid unauthorized modifications to ensure public safety. The Council stated it is working with relevant authorities to strengthen regulatory oversight and compliance monitoring for CNG conversion activities across Nigeria.
