NADDC reviews Draft National Automotive Industry Bill 2026

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has initiated stakeholder engagements in Lagos to review the Draft National Automotive Industry Bill, 2026. The proposed legislation aims to strengthen the legal, regulatory, and institutional frameworks governing Nigeria’s automotive sector.

NADDC Director-General Otunba Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin stated that the goal is to transition the country’s automotive ecosystem from simple vehicle assembly to a robust industrial value chain. Key focus areas for the new framework include local content development, component manufacturing, vehicle electrification, and regional market integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The Nigerian Automotive Manufacturers Association (NAMA) has supported the move, calling for a performance-based policy framework to drive investment and manufacturing. The new bill seeks to address existing policy inconsistencies and legislative gaps found in the National Automotive Design and Development Council Act of 2014, potentially transitioning the Council into a Commission to better manage evolving global manufacturing and green mobility trends.
