Nador West Med: Qatar-led group plans $239M sustainable aviation fuel plant
Green Sky Capital, a Doha-based group, is planning a $239 million investment to establish a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant at the Nador West Med port complex in Morocco. Located in the Betoya industrial and logistics zone, the facility aims to produce up to 200,000 tonnes of SAF per year by converting used cooking oils into fuel.
The project involves a consortium with Gulf-based capital, including the Qatari Al Mana Group and the Saudi firm Vision Invest, utilizing technology licensed from the French company Axens.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering a loan of up to $105 million, structured in an initial $85 million tranche and a potential $20 million addition. The project may also leverage support from the Green Climate Fund and an European Union first-loss guarantee to facilitate carbon-reduction technology investments. While the EBRD has set a tentative financing approval date for November 18, 2026, the project remains subject to final financial structuring and industrial development stages.
