Nae Ungureanu, Craiova Maxima football legend, dies at 69

Nae Ungureanu, a legendary figure in Romanian football and a member of the famed ‘Craiova Maxima’ generation, has died at the age of 69. The former defender was a prominent player for Universitatea Craiova between 1977 and 1987 and also played for Steaua București.

Ungureanu had faced health challenges in recent years, including a stroke in 2021 that required hospitalization. His death was reported following a period of distress after watching Universitatea Craiova’s recent Europa League play-off elimination against Ararat-Armenia.

Fellow legend Nicolae Negrilă recounted that Ungureanu passed away in his sleep following the match. Ungureanu was well known for his defensive role, including his ability to mark star player Nicolae Dobrin during his career.
