Nigeria regulatory agencies seize billions in counterfeit goods and narcotics

Nigerian regulatory agencies NAFDAC and NDLEA have conducted extensive enforcement operations across the country, resulting in the seizure and destruction of billions of naira worth of illicit goods. NAFDAC reported seizing or destroying counterfeit and substandard products valued at over N5.3 billion in Lagos, Aba, and Port Harcourt within a single week. This included the discovery of a suspected counterfeit alcohol production facility in Aba with equipment worth more than N500 million, and the destruction of N2.6 million in expired products in Rivers State.

Simultaneously, the NDLEA intercepted massive quantities of narcotics, including 8,725kg of powdered tramadol worth over N6.98 billion at Apapa Port, Lagos. The agency also intercepted a cannabis consignment concealed in palm oil at Kano airport, destined for Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the Nigeria Customs Service handed over N511.4 million in seized illicit drugs and pharmaceuticals to NAFDAC and NDLEA for further investigation.

Regarding the death of NYSC member Etimbuk Daniel at the Awgu Orientation Camp in Enugu, NAFDAC has launched an investigation. The agency dismissed initial allegations that the death was caused by substandard or falsified medicines, stating that preliminary findings suggest the death may be linked to severe malaria and complications such as low blood pressure and poor urine output.
