NAFDAC faces calls for reform and bribery allegations

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Nigeria is facing both calls for structural reform and allegations of corruption. Oluseye Olofin has issued an appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other high-ranking officials to restructure the agency. The proposal suggests that NAFDAC should prioritize its public health mandate—ensuring the safety of food, medicines, and medical devices—over its role as a revenue-generating institution.

Simultaneously, NAFDAC Director General Adeyeye has denied allegations of bribery and extortion involving contractors. Responding to calls for her resignation, Adeyeye maintained that her goal is to reform the agency and eliminate corruption. She has challenged accusers to provide evidence of wrongdoing, stating her commitment to improving the agency’s integrity and removing “some of Nigeria’s shame.”
