NAFDAC orders nationwide recall of banned sachet and small-bottle alcohol
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ordered a nationwide recall of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET or glass containers smaller than 200ml. This directive follows a Federal Government ban that officially took effect on January 1, 2026.
NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye announced the enforcement in Lagos, noting that the move aims to address public health concerns regarding the ease with which children and young people can access highly concentrated alcohol in small, easily concealed packages. The regulatory process began in 2018.
Manufacturers must withdraw prohibited products from all points in the supply chain, including distributors, warehouses, and retail outlets. Under an irrevocable enforcement undertaking signed by the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria and the Association of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employers, companies are required to comply to avoid further sanctions.
Recalled items must undergo inventory verification and be destroyed under NAFDAC supervision at the manufacturer's expense. Non-compliant companies face severe penalties, including factory closures, the revocation of product registrations, and potential prosecution. Additionally, production lines used for banned sizes must be dismantled or reconfigured under agency supervision before facilities can reopen.
