Nafplio: Historic St. John the Theologian Temple vandalized
The historic St. John the Theologian Temple in the Pronia district of Nafplio has been vandalized by unknown individuals. Perpetrators defaced the entrance with graffiti slogans and cut through window railings in an attempt to gain unauthorized access to the interior.
The extent of the damage inside the building has not yet been fully determined. The temple, often referred to as the ‘Kapodistrias chapel,’ holds significant historical importance as it was founded in 1831 on the site of the former residence of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of Greece. While construction began in 1831, it was not completed until 1909.
The site also features a marble inscription dedicated to the victims of the German occupation. The temple had been temporarily closed since 2021 due to safety concerns following rockslides from the foothills of Palamidi.
