Naga Students’ Federation commemorates 71st anniversary of Hoshepu battle

The 71st anniversary of the first confrontation between Naga forces and Indian forces at Hoshepu was commemorated on September 10. The event, held in the Aghunato area, brought together various Naga communities and student organizations, including the All Sümi Students’ Union and the Hoshepu Range Public Organisation.

Mteisuding Heraang, President of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), addressed the gathering, describing the 1955 event as a significant part of the broader Naga political movement rather than an isolated battle. Heraang advocated for the use of the term “Naga-Indo Battle” instead of “Indo-Naga Battle” to ensure the terminology reflects the Naga perspective. He noted that the NSF has already adopted a resolution to use “Naga-Indo” when referring to Naga-India political talks.

The NSF is currently examining historical records regarding the confrontation to establish a definitive historical recognition. Heraang also urged the Sümi community and the people of Hoshepu to preserve the historic site to ensure its history is passed to future generations.
