Nagaland: 19 dead after suspected spurious liquor consumption
At least 19 people have died in the Indian state of Nagaland over a two-day period following the suspected consumption of adulterated or spurious liquor. The fatalities were reported across two districts: eight deaths occurred in Mokokchung and 11 in Tuensang.
In response to the tragedy, Nagaland Police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Additional Superintendent of Police I Bunglang Chang. The SIT is tasked with investigating the circumstances of the deaths and tracing the source and supply chain of the illicit alcohol. Senior Superintendent of Police Vesupra Kezo stated that investigators have obtained some leads but cautioned that it is too early to disclose details.
During recent raids, police arrested 19 individuals and seized approximately 3,000 bottles of suspected illicit liquor. Forensic samples have been sent to a laboratory in Guwahati for detailed examination to determine the exact cause of death. Notably, the Forensic Science Laboratory in Dimapur previously detected the presence of methanol in seized illicit alcohol samples from Tuensang, though quantitative estimation was pending further analysis.
Nagaland has maintained a strict liquor prohibition law since 1990. Despite this, authorities continue to struggle with the illegal manufacture and distribution of alcohol. Police have issued a public health warning, advising citizens to avoid unlabelled or unidentified liquor and to seek immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, or breathing difficulties.
