Nagaland Bar Association rejects panel advocates' stance on AG appointment
The Nagaland Bar Association (NBA) has issued a formal rebuttal to a press statement released on September 8, 2026, by additional advocate generals and government panel advocates. The NBA's executive committee met on September 11 to address allegations from the panel advocates, who had accused the Bar of questioning the incumbent Advocate General’s engagement without constitutional mandate and acting in defiance of reason and fair play.
The NBA unanimously rejected the opposition from the government panel advocates, describing their stance as unacceptable. The association maintains a twofold position: the Advocate General of Nagaland should be appointed from within the state’s own legal fraternity, and the current incumbent has insulted and demeaned the people he represents.
Expressing surprise that members serving as government panel advocates would oppose the association's decisions, the NBA resolved to seek views from its federating units to determine future courses of action. The association emphasized that the interests of the legal fraternity should not be sacrificed for personal gain.
