Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio launches Yarn Bank scheme to support women weavers

On August 7, 2024, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio praised women weavers as the backbone of the state's handloom sector and inaugurated the virtual launch of the "Chief Minister Yarn Bank" scheme on the 12th National Handloom Day in Dimapur. The scheme establishes a dedicated facility at the State Industrial Park's district industry centre, offering natural yarns such as cotton, eri silk, muga silk and bamboo fibre at subsidised rates, with a 15% government subsidy.

The programme aims to benefit 5,000 to 10,000 weavers each year, lowering raw‑material costs, improving income and preserving Nagaland's traditional textile heritage. Eligible artisans can obtain yarn directly through a transparent distribution system using a "Yarn Pass Book".
