Nagaland Commission condemns sexual violence in Kohima

The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) has condemned two separate incidents of alleged sexual violence in the Kohima district. The first involves the reported rape and exploitation of a 12-year-old girl by her biological father. The incident was discovered during a medical checkup in Dimapur, which revealed the minor was in her third trimester of pregnancy. The suspect, a 59-year-old retired police officer, has been arrested and placed in judicial custody. Authorities are also investigating the potential involvement of the biological mother.

The second incident involves the alleged kidnapping, wrongful confinement, and sexual assault of a woman by a private taxi driver while she was traveling in Kohima. The NSCW noted that this event raises significant safety concerns for women and students who rely on public transportation.

In response to these events, the NSCW has called on law enforcement and judicial authorities to conduct thorough investigations and ensure swift justice. Additionally, the Commission urged media organizations to exercise sensitivity and protect the identities of survivors to prevent secondary trauma and social stigma, citing legal protections under the POCSO Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
