Doyang Reservoir releases trigger floods in Assam, displacing hundreds

Heavy monsoon rains raised water levels in the Doyang Reservoir in Nagaland, prompting the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) to open its spillway gates and release water in phases according to standard operating procedures. The controlled discharge caused the Dhansiri and Doyang rivers to swell, flooding more than 15 villages in Numaligarh, Assam, and submerging homes, roads and forcing families to seek shelter in temporary camps.

In Nagaon district, the resulting floods affected 732 people from 206 families across the Kalapani, Deju Valley Tea Garden and Lengpeng Tea Garden areas. The district administration set up three relief camps at local primary schools, providing meals, water, medical services and livestock care. No deaths or injuries have been reported, though livestock losses are significant. Authorities continue to monitor water levels and assess agricultural damage.

NEEPCO coordinated with district officials in Golaghat and Wokha, sharing real‑time reservoir data via a dedicated WhatsApp alert group to ensure downstream safety.
